Learn From the Pros: You should have only the experienced, professional instructors entrusted with your training. We strongly encourage that anyone learning to ride a motorcycle take a course from PROFESSIONALS. No single course or school can turn a novice rider into an experienced expert – only years of riding, along with dedicated practice, can do that. What we will do is teach you the right techniques and habits, creating a solid foundation to start a long career of riding and learning.
Stampede Driving School offers the following Motorcycle courses:
For those with little or no experience riding motorcycles, the Basic Course is the perfect place to start. Even people returning to the sport after a long absence will find the Basic Course a useful refresher.
In Class Motorcycle Theory:
In the 2 hours of classroom instruction, students are introduced to the controls of the motorcycle and some of the theory behind their operation. Also discussed: bike selection, safety equipment, road, traffic and weather hazards. Perhaps the greatest emphasis is placed on the importance of proper rider attitude. The classroom section concludes with an exam covering all topics discussed. This is a good time for students to have questions answered on a wide range of subjects, as the on-bike portion of the course is devoted mainly to riding.
Basic:
The first section is concerned with the absolute basics: getting on and off the bike, pushing, parking, starting up and shutting down. This is followed by moving off and stopping, slow-speed riding and shifting up and down.
Skills:
Using exercises which make up the motorcycle license test, students learn techniques needed to execute maneuvers at low and intermediate speeds. Emphasis is placed on smooth machine control. In the process, students are also practicing for their license test.
Emergency:
Techniques for collision avoidance, such as hard braking and swerving, are introduced and practiced.
Motorcycle Training:
Students who are deemed by our instructors to be ready for the road use the school's bikes on a controlled group ride. Rides cover anywhere from 50 to 60km, and virtually all types of conditions beginning with slower, low-traffic residential routes.
Road Test:
The Class 6 operator’s
licence road test is done in a traffic
environment. The road test is done at a registry
agent office or at an approved motorcycle
school. Tests at motorcycle schools will be
available for students who have completed an
authorized training course.
All Class 6 road tests are scheduled by registry
agents, who will arrange for driver examiners to
do the tests. This includes tests done at
motorcycle schools.
Driver examiners will assess the rider’s
“road-readiness” before entering into traffic.
The driver examiner will ensure the motorcycle
is mechanically safe before the test. If it is
not mechanically safe, the driver examiner will
not do the test.
Instructions will be given to the rider prior to
the road test. The rider will also receive
instructions in advance of each maneuver and
during the test, by use of a one-way radio. The
use of one-way radios will also allow the driver
examiner to advise the rider of immediate
dangers and stop the test if necessary. The
driver examiner will follow the rider in another
vehicle.
The rider may also stop the test by stopping in
a safe location. If the rider feels that he or
she can not continue, the road test may be
stopped by the rider and the concern or problem
can be resolved.
The road test is 45 minutes long. This enables
the driver examiner to fully assess the rider’s
skills and abilities in a variety of road and
traffic conditions. The driver examiner will be
checking to see that the rider is following the
rules of the road, and handling the motorcycle
safely. These include proper signaling, left and
right turns, road position, intersection
judgment, speed control and balance.
A fee is charged for each road test.
Taking a Motorcycle
Course:
Alberta Transportation
strongly recommends that all new riders take a
course to learn how safely ride a motorcycle.
The following are some of the skills taught at
these courses:
· · balance and control by weaving between
markers
· · riding slowly in a straight line
· · starting on a hill
· · collision avoidance
· · shifting around curves
· · emergency braking
· · turning left and right.
Basic Course Students:
You will also need to go to
the registry and write a Class 6 knowledge test,
passing this test will give you a test permit that
you will need to obtain your Class 6 license, but
you can however take the basic course without this
permit as long as you have a valid Class 5 licence.
